LaDainian Tomlinson

LaDainian TomlinsonOn February 22, 2010, after nine seasons with the San Diego Chargers, LaDainian Tomlinson was unceremoniously released. It's all business, nowadays. Forget about the fact that he helped revive the franchise with his brilliant nine-year career. But, it didn't take long for the New York Jets to snatch him up. He had two productive years with the Jets. On June 18, 2012, he signed a ceremonial contract with the San Diego Chargers and then immediately announced his retirement. Chargers president Dean Spanos said Tomlinson's No. 21 would be retired by the Chargers in the future. At the time of his retirement, Tomlinson ranked fifth in NFL history in career rushing yards, second in career rushing touchdowns, and third in career total touchdowns.

Tomlinson, born June 23, 1979, has been a premier running back since he entered the National Football League. Frequently called "LT", he set several records during the 2006 NFL season when he scored a league-leading 186 points. He received additional honors by winning the NFL’s Most Valuable Player Award and the Associated Press’s Offensive Player of the Year Award.

LaDainian Tomlinson was born to Loreane Chappell and the late Oliver Tomlinson in Rosebud, Texas. His early life was full of adversity: his brother and grandfather died when he was a child, and his father became permanently disabled after suffering a severe back injury. Later, his parents divorced, and Loreane was forced to support the remaining members of the family by herself. However before leaving, Tomlinson’s father instilled an affection for football in his son.

On June 18, 2012, Tomlinson signed a ceremonial contract with the San Diego Chargers and then immediately announced his retirement. After being elected to the College Football Hall of Fame in 2014, Tomlinson was inducted into the Pro Football Hall of Fame in August 2017, his first year of eligibility.¹
