Manny Machado. Manuel Arturo Machado (born July 6, 1992), is a Dominican-American professional baseball third baseman and shortstop for the San Diego Padres. Declared a free agent at the end of the 2018 season, Machado signed a 10-year, $300 million contract with the San Diego Padres on February 21, 2019. He previously played for the Baltimore Orioles and Los Angeles Dodgers. Manny attended Brito High School in Miami. Viewed as the second best high school position player in the 2010 MLB Draft, he was selected by the Orioles with the third overall pick. They signed him to a $5.25 million contract with just three minutes left before the signing deadline.
Machado, who bats and throws right-handed, progressed through the Orioles' minor league system for two years. On August 9, 2012, he was called up to the majors from Bowie, Maryland, where he had been playing for the Double-A Bowie Baysox. He immediately impressed by hitting two home runs in his second start. That Fall, he hit his first career postseason home run in Game 3 of the 2012 ALDS. The Orioles lost the division series to the New York Yankees in five games.
Manny got off to a hot start in 2013. An All-Star, he hit .310/.337/.470 with 7 HR, 45 RBI and 39 2B for the first half of the season. On September 23, 2013, he suffered a freak left knee injury as he reached first base following a hit. He received immediate medical attention and left the game on a stretcher. The injury ended his season as well as his consecutive-games-played streak at 207. He finished the year hitting .283/.314/.432 with 14 HR, 71 RBI and 51 2B. He led the American League in doubles, at-bats (667) and fielding percentage for third basemen (.973).
On October 10, Manny had reconstructive surgery on his knee. The surgery was supposed to sideline him for 4–6 months. He was expected to return sometime around Opening Day, 2014.
On October 29, Machado was awarded the 2013 Gold Glove Award for third basemen. He was the first Oriole to receive the honor since Brooks Robinson's 16-year run from 1960-1975. On November 8 of the same year, Machado received the AL Platinum Glove Award.
On April 29, 2014 Manny was removed from the disabled list and deemed ready to play. Unfortunately, on August 11, he injured his other (right) knee while batting in a home game against the New York Yankees. Although originally describing it as a sprain, ten days later the Orioles announced that the injury required surgery and that Machado was again out for the season.
